10,000 Years BC - KS2 Stone Age (Palaeolithic) History workshop resources for schools and home education

10,000 Years BC provides a weekly loan box package of quality replica Stone Age artefacts of flint, wood and antler for handling and discussion, along with life-sized resin replicas of world-famous portable Stone Age art items. Our loan box is fully supported by a collection of unique video learning units and activities, based upon our extensive experience of classroom teaching and KS2 curriculum design.

We believe in Hands On History

The weekly loan box package includes samples of authentic natural materials that were used by Stone Age people. Our replica artefacts are created to demonstrate their original size, appearance and function.

All items can be safely handled by children, and sanitised if required. All boxes are stored for a minimum of five days between deliveries.

Stone Age Learning Support video units (item 2/3)

The loan box artefacts are supplemented by our unique Stone Age learning support video package - a total of 2 hours' original material comprising 16 short learning units delivered by a live costumed presenter, and 11 short clips of artefacts on a rotating display. They have been developed for classroom display, individual learning, remote learning, and sharing via Zoom or other video conferencing apps.

None of these units contain Powerpoints, and they are guaranteed free of tired second-hand clip art showing stereotypical cartoon cave people(!)

All video files are in .mp4 format, HD 1920 x 1080 pixels, with a 5 Mbps transfer rate suitable for portable devices.

A small selection of these units are available for public viewing on our YouTube channel - the rest are exclusive to the artefact loan box and are not available elsewhere.

On ordering the artefact loan box your school will be given an unlimited site licence for the learning support video units.

Our learning units are cross-referenced to the KS2 National Curriculum and are thematically linked to the popular book Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura.

Full guidance notes are provided, including a co-ordinated viewing schedule - we recommend that you allocate 3 hours of (non-continuous) video viewing time during the week of the box loan to maximise the children's learning opportunities. Other video units can be viewed after the loan box has been returned.

Archaeology & Stone Age Workshop video units (item 3/3)

The live half day KS2 Archaeology & Stone Age Workshop activities that we led in over 120 primary schools between 2014 and 2020 are provided in this package as 11 short video learning units plus a Q&A session, totalling 3 hours of material. The live workshop was presented more than 300 times to around 10,000 children in total - it is most definitely tried and tested.

The original content has been enhanced with green screen backdrops, still images, video clips, sound effects, graphics and key word captions, and includes 10 pre-recorded answers to popular questions from our many Q&A sessions.

The Stone Age Art & Artists unit is available on our YouTube channel for home learning. The other ten Workshop units are exclusive to our artefact loan box, and are not available elsewhere.

On ordering the artefact loan box your school will be given a four working weeks site licence for the workshop video learning units.

Our weekly KS2 artefact loan box with video learning support scheme is available in the North West region* from Friday to Friday during term time, October - March, and May - July inclusive:

working range

*We normally work in Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire East & West, Warrington, Wigan, Wirral, Stoke-on-Trent, Wrexham, eastern Flintshire and northern Staffordshire and Shropshire, and our usual free delivery range is within a 40 road mile radius of Northwich, Cheshire. It may be possible to deliver a little further afield at our discretion for a mileage supplement - please contact us for details.

We normally conduct Fri am delivery and Fri pm collection in person via your school reception - we do not use third party couriers. For the first week of a half term, or in exceptional circumstances, we may be able to change the delivery/collection day to Mon or Tue.

The price of the full 3 item package is substantially lower than the price of our previous live workshops:

First time booking from new clients: £75 per artefact loan box per week, including delivery/collection, guidance notes, learning support and workshop video units and site licences.

For a class of 30 this is £2.50 per child.

Repeat booking from all pre-Autumn 2021 loan box/workshop clients: (contents as above) : £60 per artefact loan box per week.

For a class of 30 this is £2.00 per child.

Most schools have booked one loan box per class, but the choice is (of course) yours. Availability is currently limited to five loan boxes per week - early booking for Autumn and Spring terms is strongly advised. We will not transfer boxes directly from one school to another on the same day - all boxes are stored for a minimum of five days between bookings. In the event of irreparable damage or loss a replacement fee will be charged, maximum £20 per artefact - to date this has not been necessary.

No advance payment is required - all bookings are considered provisional on your part, and can be cancelled or rescheduled as circumstances require without loss to you. Your school will only be invoiced after the loan box has been collected and checked.

2020-21 Feedback from schools:

"The resources you have thoughtfully put together to replace the live workshops are of the highest quality. The children love the Prehistory Mystery videos linked to the excellent artefacts included in the resource pack. They have brought ancient history back to life! Great care and attention to detail has been taken to produce historically accurate, multi-sensory resources. The children have learnt so much in a short space of time. Thank you 10,000 Years BC!"
School History Leader, Cheshire East

Palaeofacts: Did you know that the Palaeolithic (or 'Old' Stone Age), starting with the first known use of stone tools over 3 million years ago and coinciding with the Pleistocene Ice Ages, accounts for 99.6% of our tool-using past? Whilst other enactors and museums may offer prehistory workshops from the Neolithic or later, we go right back to our lengthy hunter-gatherer heritage. This forms the ideal pre-agricultural starting point for a KS2 History curriculum that requires children to understand the changes that occurred between the Stone Age and Iron Age.
